Why MEGA

A network of active groups

The idea is to establish a network of groups in the Malvern area which are involved/interested in environmental and ethical issues, such as:

The bureaucratic burden for this should be kept as light as possible, and full use made of email and the web to keep the need for meetings to a minimum. There is no intention of setting up a full-blown organisation, so specific events like a Green Fair would need a lead organiser/group to take official responsibility. Unless of course things grow naturally!

The first informal gathering happened on 23rd January 2007. Please see either the discussion forum or the Malvern Green blog for the latest reports.

Led by example

Part of the prompt is the example of Redditch, where such a group of Green and Ethical groups in and around the town has recently been set up - more info at http://www.redditch-ag.info (Redditch Alliance of Greens). RAG's member groups include Redditch Freecycle, Redditch Friends of the Earth, Redditch Trade Justice Network, Redditch Veggies and Vegans, Mount Carmel CAFOD Group, CPRE Redditch, Emmanuel Church, Presentation Sisters, Reddi 4 Peace, Resurgence, St Peter's Church (Ipsley).

Updated Terms of Reference

MEGA is a network for organisations based or operating in the Malvern area committed to ethical and/or green issues. 'Malvern area' is focused on, but not limited to, the Malvern Hills District.

The network will operate on as informal a basis as possible. Members will be able to opt in or out of any activity, public communication etc.The network is non-party political, but recognises the role of campaigning or other action that member groups may take to achieve improvements in the environment, trade justice etc.

Objectives

To improve communication and co-operation between member groups.

To facilitate joint events and other ways of spreading the Green and Ethical message.

Membership

Membership is open to organisations supporting the objectives of MEGA and meeting the criteria above. Commercial and public sector bodies are welcome as Associate Members, with the intention that if there are differences of opinion, the views of the Full Members (campaigning and community groups) will have greater weight.

As new groups start up and others change or disband, it isn't always easy to recognise who qualifies. Small 'splinter' groups or new groups duplicating the work/concerns of existing ones may be asked some searching questions before they can join MEGA.

Observer status is available for those groups who wish to support MEGA but don't meet the criteria of being non-party political or sufficiently local.

Status of ToR

The first draft was discussed briefly on 23/1/07, and was thought OK.

Some amendments have been made to clarify areas of confusion:

OLD:
It is independent of political parties, but will work with them as the need arises.

NEW:
The network is non-party political, but recognises the role of campaigning or other action that member groups may take to achieve improvements in the environment, trade justice etc.
